Joe Traeger developed the first Traeger pellet barbecue in 1985 in the USA. These engineering creations have a side-mounted hopper where the combustion chamber is usually located. Barbecues are electric and controlled by a simple three-position switch. A rotating auger feeds pellets from the hopper to the fuel box, where they are ignited by a heating element. A fan then ignites the fire and distributes the heat and smoke throughout the barbecue.
